Punica. The apple of Carthage.

Punica is the pomegranate's Latin name, the Punic apple, the fruit of Carthage. We took it for an AI platform built in Tunisia: many models and agents, held together like seeds in one fruit.

Why Punica

From malum punicum to Punica granatum.

Punicus is Latin for Carthaginian, from Poeni, the Roman word for the Phoenicians who founded Carthage. The Romans met the pomegranate through Carthage and named it after the city: malum punicum, the Punic apple, or malum granatum, the apple of seeds.

When Linnaeus classified plants in 1753, he joined the two: Punica granatum. The name has carried Carthage with it ever since, and Carthage is in Tunisia.

  1. 814 BC, by tradition

Carthage is founded on the Gulf of Tunis. Legend gives its founding to Queen Dido.

  2. Roman times

Latin writers call the pomegranate malum punicum, the Punic apple: the fruit of Carthage.

  3. 1753

Linnaeus names the genus Punica and the fruit Punica granatum, the seeded apple of Carthage.

  4. Today

Pomegranates still grow across Tunisia, and Testour holds a festival for them every year.

Rooted in Carthage

Carthage stood where Tunis stands. A name from there says where Punica is built and who it is built for.

Many seeds, one fruit

A pomegranate is hundreds of seeds held together. Punica is many models and agents working as one, which is why its cursors move as a crew.

A family of names

Hannibal, Carthage's general, writes and reasons. Dido, its founding queen, speaks. Fennec, the desert fox, listens. Punica holds them.

The cursor crew

Punica is shown working: a crew of coloured cursors builds each page, points at what to do next and follows the visitor, whose own cursor is white and says You. Tags are short and lowercase: just ask anything, call Hannibal.

Voice

Plain, warm and specific. Numbers over adjectives, short sentences, no hype. Arabic words in our copy are Tunisian Derja: the greeting is Aslema, عسلامة, never another dialect's.
